Black plums are a small fruit that are actually more of a dark purple in color. They have a mild to sweet taste, and are one of the types considered a Japanese plum as they are a variety mainly grown in this Asian country, where they are really popular either eaten fresh or as a flavoring for ice cream.

They are not to be confused with the black plum tomato variety. This is a type of tomato with a rich, smoky flavor often used in sauces. And while the tomato is a fruit, it is very different to actual black plums that we’re talking about now.

Black Plum Calories and Health Benefits:

A single black plum contains approximately 30 calories, so it’s a healthy snack if you’re on the go. It has 7.5g of carbohydrates and 0.9g of fiber. They are low in fat too, with just 0.2g per fruit.

Plums are high in Vitamin C, which helps top repair cells and supports your immune system. They also contain phytonutrients, a type of antioxidant which can prevent cell degradation which leads to cancer, along with some cardiovascular diseases.

Plums also have soluble fiber, which is great for reducing bad cholesterol and keeping your heart healthy.

Black plums grow on the syzygium cumini tree, also known as the Java Plum tree or the Malabar plum tree.. It’s an evergreen tropical tree that, as well as growing in Japan, also thrives throughout Asia, with many groves in India and the Pacific Islands.

In the region the fruit is sometimes mistranslated as blackberry, but this is a different fruit altogether from the black plum tree.
