Fight Acne with Your Sweetheart

Sweetheart CherriesThink we are talking about your dearly beloved? Think again. It’s time to rethink your other sweetheart. You may think of those bright, red sweetheart cherries as just part of those sugary desserts you avoid to keep from getting acne. Think again. Cherries are now widely recognized as a nutritious, beneficial super-food. What’s so special about cherry nutritional properties is that they are one of the best fruits containing antioxidants. Antioxidants produce essential amino acids in the body that work to eliminate byproducts of oxidative stress. By doing so, antioxidants work to protect the body’s cells from being damaged by UV radiation, nitrogen, and oxygen, and therefore slow down the aging process.

The rich nutrients in sweetheart cherries include vitamin C, which boosts your body’s ability to ward off bacteria and viruses, and promotes healthy skin. Vitamin C also facilitates proper wound healing and together with the cherry’s antioxidants, it can effectively reduce inflammation. Thus, cherries help reduce puffiness in the skin, and the swelling characteristic of acne. What’s more, cherries are rich in beta-carotene, a form of vitamin A. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, beta-carotene has the same properties as common acne medications. It also helps maintain eyesight and healthy skin.

Fresh cherries are low-glycemic, which basically means they will not make your sugar levels spike in your blood. Substituting low-glycemic foods for high-glycemic in your diet may help improve acne symptoms. How to serve fresh cherries: eat fresh or unsweetened dried cherries alone, in natural trail mix, in low-fat yogurt, or in a frozen smoothie.  Cherries are a great alternative to greasy snacks like potato chips or french fries, which may contribute to clogged pores and inflammation.
