Lucuma Fruit, Incan Superfood

Share this post:

LúcumaThe lucuma, or Pouteria lucuma is a nutritious fruit typically found in Peru. Because of its location, lucuma is considered a subtropical fruit. Its other names include “eggfruit” and “lucmo.” Lucuma is different from many fruits in that its flesh is incredibly dry and a bit hard. Despite this dryness, the flesh has a very interesting taste, reminding people of the taste of sweet potatoes and/or maple.

So why is lucuma one of the organic fruits you should buy? Well, this fruit is a great source of B vitamins (particularly B3) and carotene. It is also quite the fiber rich fruit thanks to its flesh. The main reason you don’t hear much about lucuma is that it’s not grown in very many places. There has been success growing it in some areas of California, but overall, not very many areas of the United States have the right climate for it. Besides Peru, the fruit is grown sometimes in Bolivia and Costa Rica, but even this is on a limited basis.
