The Wonders of Star Fruit

The Star Fruit (Averrhoa carambola Linn.), also known as Balimbing, is a fruit commonly found these days in the Philippines. The fruit is green and may turn to green yellow when ripe. It is fleshy and forms like a star when cut into pieces.

balimbingStar fruit is a fruit of many wonders because of its several uses. For instance, the fruit is famously used as a laxative that helps stop bleeding. It’s juice can also be used to cool down fever and help prevent further eye problems. The fruit is also a good source of iron, vitamins B and C, oxalate and potassium which is good for the heart. In fact, certain studies have shown that the star fruit may slow down the heart rate for those who have increased heart rates.

Just like most antioxidant fruit drinks, the star fruit has an antimicrobial effect that helps prevent further infection from Staph aureus, E.coli and Salmonella typhi. But there is more to Star fruit than what it offers health wise. It’s juice is also most effective in removing stains for washing clothes. It’s even good for polishing and cleaning metals.

The star fruit is a great organic fruit snack. Try eating it with salt. It tastes really good.
