What Are Antioxidants?

We all keep hearing the term antioxidants and that these are necessary for us staying young and healthy. But, what are antioxidants? Why have they generated so much of interest? What are the fruits that are rich in antioxidant?

In order to understand the significance of antioxidants it is very important that to understand what free radicals are and the harmful effects they have on the human body. We need oxygen to breathe and survive but you will be surprised to know that oxygen also causes free radicals in the human body. Free radicals if left unchecked will cause aging and other harmful effects. So how does one counter it?

Antioxidants are compounds that can counter all the harmful effects of free radicals. So where does one get an antioxidant from? The food items that are rich in antioxidants are fresh fruits, vegetables and berries. Antioxidant fruits like grapes, oranges, berries, cherries, watermelon and tomatoes are said to be rich sources.

Antioxidant value of fruit increases if consumed whole but you can also take them in the form of juices. A balanced diet will be able to provide you with the required antioxidants.

What are the benefits of antioxidants?

  • Improve the immune system and helps fight diseases.
  • Prevent premature aging and protects the cells and tissues
  • Protect against cancer
  • Age related muscular degeneration is prevented.

I enjoyed your article. I think my favorite antioxidant food is strawberries. I wonder why strawberry juice isn't more popular??!!
